Bu Falls to Cheyney in Women's Basketball

BLOOMSBURG--Colleen Kegerreis (Schuylkill Haven/Schuylkill Haven) scored a game-high 22 points, but it wasn't enough as the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team dropped a 71-70 overtime game to Cheyney in the opener of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division schedule.

The Huskies came out on fire in the game jumping out to a 15-2 lead on the strength of eight points from Kegerreis, including the first six of the game. Cheyney rallied and went on a 22-8 run behind the shooting of Angel Stephens and Martina Randall to go in front 24-23 with 4:34 left in the half. Stephens scored eight points in the run, while Randall hit two three-pointers for the Wolves.

Cheyney led by one at halftime and pushed the lead to four, 40-36, after a three-pointer with 15:46 to go in the game. Bloomsburg came back using an 11-4 rally to lead by three, 47-44 with 12:48 to go. Two free throws from Kegerreis gave Bloomsburg the lead and a jumper by the senior extended the lead to three. The Wolves, though, came right back and took a four point lead with 9:14 to go. But Monica Dennsion (Zion Grove/Hazleton Area) hit back-to-back shots to put the Huskies back on top 55-53 at the 7:07 mark.

Later the Wolves hit a couple of three-pointers and three of four from the foul line to take its biggest lead of the game, 64-58, with 3:31 to go. But the Huskies got two free throws from Kegerreis to make it 64-60 game. Kelly Joyce (Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) then drained a three-pointer to get the Huskies within one at 64-63 with 1:23 to play. Cheyney was the

n fouled with 58 seconds to go, but Stephanie Orji hit just one of two shots to put the visitors up by a bucket, 65-63.

Bloomsburg's Lauren Healy (Glenmoore/Owen J. Roberts) was fouled with 37 seconds to go and hit both shots to tie the game at 65-all. After a miss from Cheyney with four seconds to play, Joyce was able to get off a three-pointer for the Huskies at the buzzer that was off the mark sending the game to overtime.

In the extra session Orji put the Wolves on top with jumper before a three-pointer from Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South)gave Bloomsburg what would turn out to be its final lead with 3:44 to go at 68-67.

Orji and Angel Henderson hit back-to-back shots to give Cheyney a 71-68 lead with 2:49 to go. Over the next minute the only points scored were two free throws from Healy, the last with 1:26 to play. The Huskies did have several shot attempts in the final minute, but could not convert.

Kegerreis finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds for Bloomsburg, while Healy added 15 with Gallagher getting 13 and Dennison 10.

Stephens and Randall each scored 17 points for Cheyney, now 6-4, 1-0 in the PSAC East, while Lutifiyya Muhammad added 16.

Bloomsburg, 8-6, 0-1 PSAC East, will play at West Chester on Saturday at 1 p.m.
